SHA-512 Hash Generator

Calculate the SHA-512 hash of any text

What is SHA-512?

A SHA-512 hash is 512 bits, shown as 128 hexadecimal characters, and has no known practical attacks. It works on 64-bit words, so on 64-bit CPUs it is often faster than SHA-256 for long inputs. SHA-256 is enough for most uses and gives shorter digests.

Examples

SHA-512 of “hello”

Hash a file in a terminal
sha512sum file.zip # Linux
shasum -a 512 file.zip # macOS

Frequently asked questions

Is SHA-512 more secure than SHA-256?

Both are secure today. SHA-512 has a larger output and therefore a larger margin against future attacks, but no practical attack exists against either.

How long is a SHA-512 hash?

512 bits, shown as 128 hexadecimal characters.

Can I use SHA-512 to store passwords?

Not on its own: it is too fast. Use Argon2id, bcrypt or scrypt. The crypt(3) scheme “SHA-512 crypt” used by Linux adds a salt and thousands of rounds, which is different from a single SHA-512 hash.
